When Someone Rearranges Your Home

It caught me off guard.

Our real estate agent, who also happens to be a friend, asked if she could move some of our furniture around before listing our home.

On the surface, it was a perfectly reasonable suggestion. Homes are staged every day.

But my first reaction surprised me.

After all the years we’ve lived here, after all the conversations they’ve had in these rooms, my mind immediately went to, “So…have they been judging my home this whole time?”

I know that’s an overreaction. Emotions usually are.

But it made me think about something much bigger.

Whenever we invite someone into our home, our business, or even our finances, there is always a little vulnerability. It’s why taking your taxes to a new accountant feels uncomfortable. You wonder if they’re silently critiquing everything your last accountant did. It’s why people hesitate before hiring a designer. Deep down they’re wondering, Are they about to tell me everything I love is wrong?

That fear is real.

It’s also one of the biggest misconceptions about great design.
